Introduction

As a future masters prepared nurse leader, it is crucial to reflect on experiences of incivility and explore how effective communication can foster a civil environment. This journal entry will recount an incident of incivility, discuss the potential for effective communication to yield a different outcome, and reflect on the personal growth and knowledge gained during this module.

Incident of Incivility

During my clinical rotation, I witnessed an incident of incivility between a nurse and a nursing assistant. The nurse displayed a condescending and dismissive attitude towards the nursing assistant, belittling her contributions and ignoring her concerns (Abate & Greenberg, 2023). This behavior not only undermined the nursing assistant’s confidence but also created a hostile environment for teamwork and collaboration.

Effective Communication for a Different Outcome

Had effective communication been employed, the outcome of this incident could have been significantly different. The nurse could have practiced active listening and shown empathy towards the nursing assistant’s concerns. By valuing her input and acknowledging her contributions, the nurse could have fostered a sense of respect and collaboration. Additionally, open dialogue and clear communication channels could have been established, enabling both parties to address any misunderstandings or conflicts promptly and professionally.

Reflection on Creating a Civil Environment
