Does CBD effect Neurite Outgrowth in PC12 cells?
Canabidiol (CBD) is known to bind to many cellular targets including CB1 and CB2 as well as several other cell surface proteins and intracellular targets. The binding of CBD to cellular targets has been associated with several potential health benefits such and anti-inflammatory activity, anti-oncogenic activity and benefits to nervous system function.
This laboratory course is focused on the development of the nervous system. The neurological benefits of CBD range from a positive effect on the neuronal cells function in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, neuronal dysfunction as seen in epilepsy to benefits to human behavior by reducing anxiety and benefits to psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. Further, CBD has been shown to act on PC12 cells, the cells we are working with in this laboratory course.
In this course we will be adding CBD to cultures of PC12 cells and observing the effect of CBD on neurite formation. These studies will be the subject of a semester long project and laboratory report. For those students working remotely, the laboratory report will consist of hypothetical data that both support your hypothesis and your null hypothesis. This will be discussed in full detail later. For students working on campus, the hope is that the lab will yield the data in time to be used in your report. If it is not, you will like those working remotely, develop hypothetical data.
PC12 cells are a widely accepted neuronal cell culture. These cells are derived from the rat pheochromocytoma tumor of rats. Treatment of PC12 cells results in neurite formation which is an important event in the development of the central and peripheral nervous system. The possible hypothesis of the class are the CBD enhances neurite outgrowth, inhibits neurite outgrowth, alters the quality of the neurite (thickness or branching) or has no effect.
This semester you as students will write a research article on the effect of CBD on neurite outgrowth in PC12 cells if any. You are expected to mater and understanding of the endocannabinoid system, the benefits of CBD to neurological function and health, the neuronal targets to CBD, evidence that CBD can effect neurite formation and the value of neurite formation to the development of the nervous system. This mastery will be presented as a semester term paper, the complete rubric for which will be presented soon.
