Note that there are several versions of this book, some with slightly different titles. This book, written by a former colonial Spanish slave-owner and later Catholic bishop who campaigned against slavery, contrasts two different implicitly philosophical attitudes toward other humans and toward the natural world, as experienced in the Spanish Conquest of the “Indies.” (It will be sufficient to read only the Introduction and approximately the first half of Las Casas’ book.)
