The Greek Crisis
It’s 480 B.C.E. and you’re a political leader in Athens, a Greek polis still recovering from being sacked by the Persians only ten years prior. Word is that Xerxes I is personally leading a larger Persian force on Sparta, a rival polis. An embassy from Sparta asks for Athens’s support, citing the greater evil of a Persian invasion of Greece. What advice would you offer Athens in this case?
Consider your options:
Reject the Spartan embassy and allow Sparta’s troops to fight the Persians alone
Accept the Spartan embassy and agree to provide troops and your fearsome navy
Negotiate with the Persians in hope of a lenient settlement
