General Guidelines

• Papers must be 3-4 pages in length; use APA format; use 12-point font; be double-spaced; and include a title page, introduction, body of the report, summary or conclusion, and references.
• At least 4 authoritative, outside references are required (anonymous authors or web pages are not acceptable). These should be listed on the last page, titled References.
• Appropriate in-text citations throughout the body of your paper are required.
• All DeVry University policies are in effect, including the plagiarism policy. Papers will be checked for originality through TurnitIn and it is expected that the match with other resources does not exceed 25% or the text.
• Deliverables due dates are specified in the Syllabus.
• Any questions about this paper may be discussed in the Course Q & A Forum discussion topic. This paper is worth 110 total points and will be graded on originality, quality of the content, writing, use of citations, flow of information, grammar, and sentence structure.

Deliverables and Grading Rubrics

Week 5 Deliverable: Draft (30 points)

A one and a half to two page draft of your paper is due this week (you may certainly write more but a minimum of one and a half pages is required to satisfy the content criteria. Your draft should indicate how you plan to address project objectives and expectations, show some details from your research, and show the primary sources of information you have identified. Your draft may address any or all of the following objectives.

3. Explain challenges related to HIE.
4. Describe benefits of HIE for various stakeholders.
5. Explain the role of clinical terminologies and data standards in HIE.
6. Evaluate the significance of data quality characteristics in HIE.
7. Describe your interest in HIE as a consumer.
8. Discuss any state-specific HIE findings from your research.

Your HIE Paper should be primarily based on academic research but you can also use credible Internet sources such as the AHIMA, HIMSS, or HealthIT ones, as well as informational interviews with those involved in HIE.

Grading Rubric for Week 5 Deliverable—Draft

Week 7 Deliverable: Completed HIE Paper (80 points)

The completed written paper is due this week. Your HIE Paper should be primarily based on academic research but you can also use credible Internet sources such as the AHIMA, HIMSS, or HealthIT ones, as well as informational interviews with those involved in HIE. Be sure that your final paper addresses the following objectives.

1. Explain the concept of health information exchange (HIE).
2. Explain the structure and types of HIE.
3. Explain challenges related to HIE.
4. Describe benefits of HIE for various stakeholders.
5. Explain the role of clinical terminologies and data standards in HIE.
6. Evaluate the significance of data quality characteristics in HIE.
7. Describe your interest in HIE as a consumer.
8. Discuss any state-specific HIE findings from your research.

The paper should be well-written, well-organized, approximately 3-4 typed pages in length, double-spaced, and using 12-point font (APA format). The page count does not include your cover page or References page. You must include a References page, as well as in-text citations where necessary. References and in-text citations must be in the APA format.

Best Practices

The following are the best practices in preparing this paper.

• Cover Page—Include the title of the paper, course number, professor’s name, your name, and the date. <>
• Introduction—Use a header to indicate that you are introducing your paper.

The purpose of an introduction or opening is to <>

1. introduce the subject and why it is important;
2. preview the main ideas and the order in which they will be covered; and <>
3. establish the document’s tone.

Include in the introduction a reason for the audience to read the paper. Also include an overview of what you are going to cover in your paper and the importance of the material. (This should include or introduce the questions you are asked to answer on each assignment.)

• Summary and Conclusion—Summarizing is similar to paraphrasing but presents the gist of the material in fewer words than the original. An effective summary identifies the main ideas and major support points from the body of your report. Minor details are left out. Summarize the benefits of the ideas and how they affect the subject.
• Body of Your Report—Use a header titled with the name of your project. An example is The Development of Hotel X: A World Class Resort. Then state the main ideas, state major points in each idea, and provide evidence. Research each main idea you will use in the body of your paper. Show some type of division, such as separate sections that are labeled, separate groups of paragraphs, or headers. You will include the information you found during your research and investigation.

1. Apply a three-step process of writing: Plan, write, and complete.
2. Prepare an outline of your research paper before you go forward.
3. Complete a first draft and then go back to edit, evaluate, and make any changes required.
4. Use visual communication to further clarify and support the written part of your report. You could use example graphs, diagrams, photographs, flowcharts, maps, drawings, animation, video clips, pictograms, tables, and GANTT charts.
