Analysis
Chad Abushanab has written a phenomenal debut of poetry collection known as The Last Visit. The debut is a collection of ideas that revolve around substance abuse, particularly alcohol. E revolves so much around alcoholism is almost all of his poems. A clear narration of how the author has experienced alcoholism is captured in one of his poems, known as Halloween. Here, the author informs the audience of how his father is a drunkard and how he is going to face his drunkardness in the evening, But before I walk away, back home where my dad swills gin, curses game-show hosts, and trucks of smuggled Mexicans, I know I’ve made the most of fear (page 12). While focusing on his main agenda, alcoholism, the author sues some suggestions that would lead the audience to grasp the intended message. He has included slangs and words that revolve directly around alcoholism. The main focus of this essay will narrow down to three of the poems found in the collection; Plastic Men, Boys, and Halloween.
The organization of the authors’ work is variant in nature. For example, he uses very simple alignment in his writing g of Plastic Men. The poem does not have separate stanzas; instead, the author decides to use a single stanza is almost what is viewed as prose, and nonetheless, there are no rhyming words or a sequential rhyme scheme in the poem. Similarly, Boys does not have any inclusion in rhyming words. However, the poem is separated by stanzas that make reading easy. Like all of the mentioned poems, the narration of the idea inHalloweenuses the first person singular. The author, throughout the book, has used the first person singular to build on his idea.
The author has managed to convey the picture of the tragic world that his mother is undergoing together with all his siblings through the poem Plastic. The diction in this poem could be an aid to be straight forward and intense. The intense pain that e mother is in is demonstrated through the use of words such as “missing arm, hand broken at the wrist and green bruise on the eyes.” All these expressions are used to describe the pain that the mother is going through. With passing years, the author is now going into adulthood and finds it difficult to associate with his father, who terms him as a coward and a boy. In the poem Boys, there is the use of disparate diction. The child in the poem is desperate to earn his father’s love. To earn this love, the son has learned to be a bully and beat up other boys (Boys, 12). I pack a solid right-left bloodied by his broken lips (Abushanab 12). It is clear from the description that the boy has found no compassion for his father. He is only left to pity his mother, who has broken lips (12).
Similar to the poem Boys, Halloween has built the child’s endeavor to earn even greater father’s love. However, unlike the deaerate diction that has colonized Boys, Halloween has built up the diction of determination.
Conclusion
The author has achieved to build on his theme throughout the debut. His collection is aimed at the effects of alcoholism. The three poems are solely based on this idea. Alcoholism has led to some form of violence throughout the three poems: Boys, Halloween, and Plastic men. The narrator’s father indulges in fighting the mother to the extent of injuring her. The narrator s mother is very injured because we learn that she has been taken to the hospital with some form of bruises in her eyes. Nonetheless, the author has achieved to build a consistent work arrangement. He has used stanzas, in most cases one stanza, to build up his theme.
