After high school I wanted to challenge myself by going overseas to korea. I couldn’t understand how the 3 month gap between highschool graduation and university enrollment would make me an “adult” and help me transition to the next big chapter in life. I had to stop and ask myself, “ do i want to go to university because i really want to or just because i have to?”. The more I thought about my life and myself, the more I became certain about taking a gap year. I went overseas because I knew that staying close to home in a familiar environment would not improve my independence.I wanted to challenge myself by trying to occupy another way of life in a different culture – living with a new family, speaking the language, integrating into a community, and working with new people.i took these time to understand myself, develop empathy and virtue, and expand my capacity to see the world from others’ perspectives. One of the difficult parts of taking a gap year was seeing all my friends move on to college while I’m overseas by myself waiting for my journey to begin. With the power of social media, it was easy to feel left out. I was scared to do something untraditional but I thought to myself that there is really no other time in my life where i can just take a year for myself to find what makes me , me.

As soon as i arrived in korea, I signed up for art school because i wanted to improve my sketch skills since i was always insecure about my drawings. For 5 months, I drew everyday and went to art school 5 days a week for four hours . I stopped going when I gained confidence in my drawings. It took me 5 months but i am very happy that i chose to do that.i got very stressed from going to the art school so i needed to do something that makes me happy so i reduce my stress which was ceramics. Ceramics helped me through overcoming my loneliness and it taught me how to be patient. After I gained confidence in my art I decided to go to graphic design school. I learned how to digitally draw on computers for two months as a hobby and I tried learning coding to know the roots of web designing. After learning coding for 2 months I learned how to make basic websites . After learning coding I learned how to graphically appeal attention. (coding taught me to never slack off because one day of not studying ruins the learning of the next day. I learned it in the hardest way). I learned photoshop and illustrator professionally for a month because I wanted to be able to express what’s in my head exactly to the computer. I also spent my free time to go on youtube and find other people’s work and tutorials to improve my skills. Because I lived by myself I learned and taught myself to be productive. Living in korea opened my eyes in design more. I learned that all the cultures have their style, culture and trend were different. I looked at many logos, billboards, posters and etc at different times. There were logos from the 1900s and ones that were made this year. I was amazed by the differences in every culture’s graphic designs.
