ORGANIZATION OF THE REVIEW:

1. Author, title, publisher and date of publication should be at the top of the first page.

2. Introductory paragraph (s): In the first one or two paragraphs, introduce the book and the author and give your initial appraisal of the work. By the end of the introductory paragraphs(s) the reader should know who Erin George is, what the book is generally about and whether or not you feel the book is worth the ink and paper it is written on. Try to include a short quotation to give the reader a feel for the style of the book. The introductory paragraph(s) should engage the reader and make him/ her want to continue reading your review.

3. Analysis: Here you will write a descriptive analysis of the text by describing the book’s contents, the author’s arguments and the presentation or style of the text. Some questions to consider when writing this section:

a. What is George’s purpose in writing the book?

b. What are the principal arguments and themes?

c. What type of evidence does she use?

d. How qualified is George to write this work?

e. What style does George employ in writing this work?

4. Evaluation of the text: This section should present your evaluation of the content and the style. Some questions to consider are:

a. Is the book convincing in style and substance? Why or why not?

b. Does George accomplish her purpose in writing the book?

c. Is the book well organized? Why or why not?

d. Is the book well written? Why or why not?

e. Do you think George is fair or biased in her assessment of prison life?

f. Are there portions of the book that should be left out?

g. Are there other subjects that should be included?

5. Conclusion: In this paragraph give your overall assessment of the text. How useful was it to you asa Criminal Justice student? Should it be used in this class again? Should it be used in any other classes? How does the book contribute to the field of Corrections and Criminal Justice?

Under grads- paper should be a minimum of 1000 words and a maximum of 1300 words

Grads- paper should be a minimum of 1250 and a maximum of 1500 words

2. Font- Use 12 point font.

3. Submit as a WORD or PAGES document. Do not submit as a PDF!

4. Name and page numbers must be on the bottom of each page.

5. Grammar and spelling count!!!!! Use grammar and spell check as well as the dictionary.

6. Read, edit, re-read and proof read your papers.
