What is an Anthology?
GRADE 11 – CULMINATING ASSIGNMENT
Introduction to the Culminating
What is an Anthology?
An anthology is a collection of selected writings by various authors, usually in the same literary form of the same period, or on the same subject.
As a culminating task for this course, you will create an anthology that expresses your understanding of MORALITY. Morality can cover a wide range of topics
- Sin
- Personal Difficulties
- Breaking the Law
- Peer Pressure
- Guilt
- Betrayal
- War
- Rivalry
Defining your topic?
We have read many texts and are currently reading a novel that deals with many of these topics. Let’s think deeply for a few minutes about what these topics mean. No matter what topic you choose, you will be creating an anthology that ARGUES a specific claim about your topic that is based on readings you have selected and your own critical thinking.
Searching for Texts
For your anthology, you will need to have a mixture of texts. You must include:
- one poem
- one essay
- one short story
- one song
- a podcast
You will be representing each of these texts in your anthology, and you will be analyzing ONE of them in greater detail. While you will not need to actually include the entire text of every selection in the anthology (in other words, you don’t have to reprint an entire essay or download a film), you will need to include excerpts, and you will need to ensure that your teacher is able to access any text you wish to include in your anthology via a link. Remember that for this assignment, your five texts cannot be ones that you read as a part of this course.
What are some strategies for finding texts to include in your anthology?

Make Friends with a Librarian
Librarians are experts at research. If you haven’t already enlisted the help of a librarian when working on a project, now is the time to get started. They can point you to specific resources you have available at your local library, such as databases and journals. Consult your local library’s virtual resources to see how they can help.
Culminating Product Proposal
Start researching the different topics to narrow your choice. Once you have selected a topic, you must develop a specific thesis or theme statement related to that topic. For example, what specifically do you want to illustrate about betrayal? Do you want to look at this topic as it applies to a specific group of people? Limiting the scope of your research will help you strengthen the argument of your anthology. Once you have settled on your topic/sources, complete the Culminating Assignment Proposal graphic organizer.
