Movie girl rising
Global Studies 201 – Fall 2020 Film Analysis Paper I. General Overview This film analysis of Girl Rising will allow you to critically examine the challenges faced by girls throughout the world and relate the film to the book I am Malala. You should analyze the topic below and avoid a general summary of the film and book. First, take a stand and support your position with a compelling argument. Be sure to include a title, an introduction, a well-developed body comprised of several paragraphs, and a conclusion. State your argument clearly at the beginning in your thesis statement, and make sure you use specific examples to back up your argument. Your analysis must be submitted to dropbox on D2L by Friday, November 20th at 11:59 pm. II. Topic In the film Girl Rising and book I am Malala, we have seen the many challenges faced by girls throughout the world. In your opinion, what are two of the most significant challenges they faced? In what ways did these girls show intelligence, resilience and ingenuity in finding ways to overcome these challenges? How do family, community, and education play a role in finding solutions to these problems? Please support your argument with specific and numerous examples from Girl Rising and I am Malala. To review the girls’ stories from the film, please see the Girl Rising Teacher’s Guide posted under Week 12 of the content module and your viewing guide assignment. The film is also linked here if you need to re-watch certain parts of the film. Girls featured in Girl Rising: Sokha – Cambodia Ruksana – India Wadley – Haiti Senna – Peru Suma – Nepal Mariama – Sierra Leone Yasmin – Egypt Amina – Afghanistan Azmera – Ethopia III. Rules for film analysis: A. Length: 2 ½ – 3 pages, typed, double-spaced, 12 point font, 1” margins: Be concise but analytical! B. Organization: Your first paragraph should be comprised of a brief introduction to the topic and include a specific thesis statement (what you will argue or prove in your essay). Typically a thesis statement can begin something like “In this paper, I will argue / I will demonstrate / I will show…etc.” You should be specific in stating what you will prove, and then every paragraph of your body should relate to that thesis statement. Try to avoid wandering off topic or providing a summary of the film or text. You should also wrap up your analysis with a conclusion—but be careful that this is not just a repeat of your introduction. C. Analysis & Evidence: Be sure to include evidence from the book I am Malala and the film Girl Rising to support your argument. You should integrate your opinion about this issue but be sure to back it up with specific examples from the text and film. If you conduct outside research, select scholarly and reputable sources rather than popular sources such as blogs or social media sources. Also, if you quote a source directly, be sure that you cite it to avoid plagiarism and then include the source in a bibliography using MLA format. If you need help with MLA format, please talk with a librarian at Briggs Library (the library offers online/virtual chat sessions) or send me an e-mail. D. Be creative and make connections: Make your writing interesting, articulate, and relevant. E. Communicate effectively: Work diligently at descriptive writing that presents your ideas clearly. Remember that you should first form an argument or thesis statement and then illustrate that argument throughout your analysis. Writing is a process that only improves with much practice, repetition, and revision.
