Macbeth, Act 1. Whatever you do in your reading, don’t bypass the witches. They are very important. Their speech is filled with ambiguity. “Fair is foul, and foul is fair. / Hover through the fog and filthy air.” (M 1.1.11-12) Incidentally, that’s the correct way to quote the play. Question: Why do you think the sex of these creatures is ambiguous? and do you think they mirror — in any way — the marriage of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth?
