Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to practically apply your knowledge regarding specific genre tropes, themes, and conventions to a specific story within that genre.
Instructions
Pick one of the stories that we read for ourFantasy section; analyze the story in the light ofboth the ‘centers of gravity’ for Fantasyand the other tropes, themes, and conventions of Horror that we discussed in class; and answer the following questions:
(a) when does the story line up with those tropes, themes, and conventions, and why does it line up?
(b)when does the storynot line up with those tropes, etc., and why does it not line up?
(c) when is it ambiguous or unclear if the story lines up or not, and why is it ambiguous or unclear?
Suggested Outline and Required Content
The following outline shows one possible arrangement of the content of your paper as well as all the required content.
- Introduction:summarize and explainboth the ‘centers of gravity’ and the various tropes, themes, and conventions of Fantasy that have been presented in class
- 1st Body Paragraph:select and summarize a specific moment in your chosen story where the story lined up with the tropes, etc. of Fantasy and explainwhy and how it lines up
III. 2nd Body Paragraph:select and summarize a specific moment in your chosen story where the story did not line up with the tropes, etc. of Fantasy and explain why and how it does not line up
- 3rd Body Paragraph:select and summarize a specific moment in your chosen story where the story is ambiguous or unclear about whether or not it lines up with the tropes, etc. of Fantasy and explain why and how it is ambiguous or unclear
- Conclusion:summarize and explainwhat you original thought it meant for a story to be considered a ‘Fantasy’ story and then summarize and explainhow the past six lectures and three stories have changed, altered, or confirmed what you thought (how has it changed your mind or expanded your understanding or appreciation of the genre?)
