Cloud storage

Abstract

This paper presents a review of the literature regarding cloud storage. The three major foci of the literature are explored and examples are given. The first group covers the overall architecture utilized in cloud storage and the methods the user can utilize to access the data; this category is highly technical and does not usually cover business related topics. The second group of literature is the business uses for cloud storage; this category includes use case scenarios and cost benefit analyses. The third major area in literature is the high performance computing arena. Several examples of each focus are presented and analyzed. It is noted that the literature appears to start in 2007 as no earlier references were found. This indicates a very active academic topic that is still in its infancy. Cloud storage is a rapidly emerging technology, where data that would traditionally be stored on a personal or company computer is stored by a storage provider. The provider gives access to these resources through virtual interfaces. More companies are looking at clouds to fulfill storage requirements that may or may not be viable candidates for mainstream storage. The high performance technical computing and the business users continue to explore the economics of cloud storage strategy. The more technical aspects continue to explore protocol efficiencies to drive the economics. With the rapid increase in literature in the last two years, this topic will continue to be pertinent.
