Apply the knowledge learned through readings and guided questions this week, and:

• Review the Case Study: Family living with Parkinson’s disease with Increasing Caregiver Strain on UM Learn
• Reflect on the following questions based on the Case Study:

1. In Rolland’s Family Systems-Illness Model there is an acknowledgement that chronic illness takes different courses over time. What type of course of chronic illness is this family facing? What are the specific psychosocial demands created for this family by the illness?

1. Rolland also describes different phases of chronic illness – what phase is this family currently experiencing and what specific challenges are a part of that phase for them. Who in this family is suffering the most in this phase?

1. If you were the nurse working with this family, how might the assigned article “Family caregivers’ decision process to institutionalize persons with Parkinson’s disease: A grounded theory study” (Abendroth, Lutz, & Young, 2012) inform the focus of your family intervention? Discuss two specific strategies might you offer Diana to manage the caregiver strain she is experiencing based on this article? Would it be important to involve other family members in your intervention? How would you approach this?
