Editing what I wrote w/o changing my context
Write a brief synopsis of the film you signed up for in Sign-Up Wiki: Week 2 Film. Include the following in your analysis:
- What family-based theoretical model could readily be applied to the main characters, and why do you think so? What other related theories apply (crisis theory, stress theory, grief and loss theory, and so on)?
- Describe key roles and functions of the main characters as related to family theory (power, discipline, communication, roles, and relationships such as hero or scapegoat, family rules, family themes, or family myths). Choose the ones that are relevant to the characters and plot only.
- Identify how the family structure or dynamics would affect your ability to provide health care to the individual members and identify what home factors would need to be considered when adopting care (this might be physical, psychological, financial, spiritual, or something else).
“THE HELP”
The movie, The Help (Columbus et al., 2011), provides such an insightful perspective on family developmentwith Eugenia’s main characters. “The Help talked about an inspiring young, 23-year old, white woman writer, Eugenia, and two black maids, Aibileen and Minny. Eugenia defied her mother’s advice to get married like the rest of her friends to becomes a writer. Eugenia friended with Aibileen and Minny to write the book that exposed racism and segregation in a white household where the civil rights movement was happening. Eugenia was a strong mind and personality to author a story about the black maids’ perceptions of being a maid at different homes and raising white children. The book became a best-selling book.
The Help portrays a dynamic family relationship and development that includes family with infants, young children, and adult children, along with middle-aged families, a married couple, family with the elderly. Any family nursing theories such as family system theory, family developmental and life cycle, or bioecological system theory (Kaakinen et al., 2018) would apply each of the main characters’ family and friend circles. Nonetheless, the bioecological systems theory(BST) suits best. It focuses on the family normative changes and adaptation to stress (Kaakinen et al., 2018) and how each system is interdependent. The BST has the holistic framework aspectfor NPs to assess, plan, and create goals and interventions to help the families portrayed in the movie. The framework can use to evaluate each family and its members for each system interactions. The BST dynamic can effectuate and evolve as a result of social and cultural changes over time.
Many other theories with abstract and not as parsimonious as BST would apply to family nursing when analyzing The Helper. However, BST’s holistic viewpoint is similar toModeling and Role Modeling(MRM) (Erickson et al., 1983) and Behavioral System Model (BSM) (Johnson, 1980). MRM is an interactive process with holistic emphasis that effectively evaluates the main character’s friends and family to self-trust, reinforce self-control and strength with goals, and focus on their needs (Erickson et al. 1983). It is an all-inclusive nursing framework to measure and provide nursing involvements that require contact between the nurse and the client to empower them through changes and adaptation of the family development life cycle.
The BSM is more abstract but also suitable to develop concrete nursing goals and actions. The BSM encompasses holistic nursing, metaparadigm, and worldview concerning an individual and family behavioral changes to adapt to reach an equilibrium state. Johnson (1990) depicted the BSM practice methodology to determine the focus problem as causes, effect, and reason for specific behaviors.
The movie develops an excellent Eugenia character, an intelligent young woman who defied the social norm of getting married and domesticated housewife and childbearing to elitists pressure. She got educated and challenged the intelligent with provoking thoughts that caused conflict with her elitist friends’ circle when she attempted to reunite. She stood up to the social norm both on the most challenging topic of segregation of the 1960s. Her civil right-leaning empowers her to make her own decision to move to New York and pursue her dream novelist writer for a famous publisher. Eugenia’s character matches the micro, -meso, -macro, and -chronosystems.
Aibileen’s character encompasses different family adaptions, such as coping with her son’s loss, single mother, calm, quiet, and raised other white family children. She portrayed as quiet, assertive with a strong personality that is “wise and witty.” She values spiritual to help her cope with her son’s loss and the decisions to make in life. Her spiritual strength helps embrace self-empowering, stands up to her belief, and aspires to become a writer, like Eugenia toward the end.
Minny’s character is different from both Eugenia and Aibileen. Minny is feisty, brazen, outspoken, and a sharp tongue with a kind heart. She is not afraid to stand up to advocate for righteousness. She endures her husband’s physical abuse and childrearing her kids. She endured hardship without complaining. She later found out the new employer, Celia, promised the lifetime job that encourages her to leave her abusive husband and support her young children. Her personality emboldens her to speak out on injustices when Hilly tried to control the elitist group with fears and threats.
The family definition is not just a husband, wife, and children, but also traditional, blended, or same-sex parents. These areas influence the nursing intervention and care plan with the trust aspect with non-judgmental. The number of immigrants is growing in the U.S. NPs must take cultural and health practice beliefs into consideration, such as Hmong, who might use Sharman for healing practice. In contrast, Asians and Hispanics might practice hot and cold practice beliefs. Hence, careful assessment is essential for the nurse to reflect and set personal beliefs aside to empower the family unit.
