Seeing people generally with mental illness and experiencing significantly high risk of negative impact on their life style and unjustifiable stigma in the society overwhelm me. Sincerely due to my culture and Christian background, I see people with mental illness as the same as my brothers, sisters, children and parents.
My personal experience with mental health patients in the acute ward where I work as an healthcare assistant with multidisciplinary teams, like the psychiatrists, occupational therapists, social workers, families, general practitioners and many others have enlightened me with a broad spectrum of knowledge, skills and important values as to how to deal with mental patient in general and to bring some positive change into their life style.
Working as an HCA, my service users have always been my top priority and I have consistently provided all patients with the best quality of care which is evidence based and in line with best practice principles. I maintain follow the national standard guide as well as the policies and procedures at work as my guidelines, ensuring that the service users always feel welcome and safe especially during admission and they are treated with dignity and respect by all staff. I do oriented them and explain to them every procedure that they undergo and make them feel part and parcel of any decision about their care.
I always assess the needs of my service users with the multidisciplinary team to ensure that they are given effective and timely treatment which always give them the satisfaction and make them feel that I spent quality time with them. I educate them to understand the healthcare service they are receiving and what is coming next.
I communicate effectively with them and ensure that every treatment and procedures that was administered like the vital signs and medications are clearly documented. The fact that I always work within my competency limits, I have the courage and confident to reflect and raise any concern immediately to ensure that the service users and staff are safe as well as act on any feedback.
I always build a good rapport and working relationship based on honesty, empathy, respect and trust.
Being a mental health nurse is an exciting crossroad for me where I want to become highly skilled and assertive, especially on placement to ensure that my learning needs are met, which will make me question myself professionally and personally. Be prepared to organise myself well and study effectively by getting the right information from the library core text books ask my lectures for advice on the most appropriate publications.
My main perception of becoming a mental health nurse is to have the opportunity not only to work on providing the best treatment available but also to continue to combat the stigma and social exclusion within the society.
