Evidence Based Practice

For this paper, follow APA (7th ed.) guidelines for paper format, grammar, and language. Reference at least three sources from scholarly and peer-reviewed sources in addition to your text. Cite in-text and list references per APA format.

Length: four to six pages of text (not including the title page, abstract, references).

Now, consider this real-life situation: You are a BSN, RN, with five years of experience, demonstrated competence, and leadership experience. You are quite proud of the quality care you provide to your clients/patients (describe the healthcare setting/unit of your choice) and your colleagues (define the relevant healthcare team members). However, you feel your unit could improve patient outcomes by implementing one of the IOM core competencies (CCs). Research and examine an IOM CC, and briefly formulate a plan to educate your staff and implement a new strategy to improve specific patient outcomes. There are no right or wrong answers, only more or less research and reflection.

Introduction (Do not label)

· Give the reader some background and a sense of what the paper will address-Identify core competency & clinical context of nursing practice where it is applied

· Describe one of the IOM Core Competencies (CCs), and the impact it has on patient care outcomes. Do not choose patient-centered care. (Research the CC in peer-reviewed, scholarly sources)

Practice Context

· Briefly describe the context of your practice (either current or future hoped-for), including the unit or healthcare setting/facility, location, fellow healthcare providers (1-2 paragraphs max).

· Describe the clients/patients generally cared for, especially some key patient outcomes for this group (1-2 paragraphs max).

· Explain how important the identified IOM CC is to this unit

Improving Patient Outcomes

· Based on your research on your chosen CC, describe specific strategies to positively impact your clinical practice and patient care outcomes in the chosen clinical context.

· Describe potential barriers in your clinical context to implementing the strategies you have suggested.

· Given the anticipated barriers, explain how to implement the IOM CC strategies discussed. Implementation plans/ideas must be included for successful implementation of the CC (should be reasonable and achievable).

Reflection/Discussion

· Discuss how you can specifically implement the strategies suggested to improve patient outcomes on your unit.

· Reflection questions:

o Is this a realistic change given current barriers (economic, political, and attitudinal)?

o What can you personally do to implement the strategies suggested?

o What will you find most difficult?

o What is the time frame anticipated?

o Can you advocate for this change in your real practice setting?

Conclusion

· Summarize the key points of the paper
