Compare and contrast Heraclitus and Parmenides. How is each philosopher’s theory a radical solution to the problem of “being and becoming.” How does Heraclites see the nature of reality? Does he present an archê? What do you make of the material image of fire? What other analogies does he use for the principle of change? How does his view seem to imply relativism? How does Parmenides view the nature of reality? Why is change logically absurd based on his three options (being is, non-being is, and both being and non-being are real). Note his distinction between doxa and aletheia. Describe one of Zeno’s paradoxes. Does it prove the absurdity of motion? Why or why not?
