Looking at the person in environment it consists of focusing on the individual’s interactions with different systems. According to Kondrat (2017) the person in environment provides more adequate framework for assessing an individual and his/her presenting problem and strengths than an approach that focuses on solely on changing an individual’s behavior or psyche, or one that focuses on the environmental conditions.

After reading the passage by Engel (2012), the model was made by a medical scientist for the study of diseases. When looking at the model there is no room for social, psychological or behavior dimensions of illnesses. So, it does not take into account the patient’s environment. The biopsychosocial model considers that social context, the patient and illnesses (Engel, 2012). Considering bother of these models seek to improve the situation that the client is in.

Both biomedical and the biopsychosocial models, they both have their disadvantages. One of the disadvantages of the biomedical model is when a client is being diagnosed with a very specific disorder it can be difficult because other factors are influencing the diagnosis. An example if Schizophrenia, according to Engel (2012) there is evidence that genetic and environmental influences this. One advantage of the biomedical is there technical procedures and lab measurements. One advantage of the biopsychosocial model is it is very difficult to learn according to Kontos (2011). One advantage of the biopsychosocial model is the clients are apart of this process meaning they participate.

Looking at the person in environment perspective, it relies on the concept of the biopsychosocial model, it focuses on the client’s environment. It takes into consideration the biological problems of the client, and the psychological issues of the client as well as the effect on society.

Person-in-environment perspective is based on the idea that an individual’s behavior cannot be completely understood without taking into consideration the different aspects of that individual’s environment such as their culture, social status, religion, family, and economic status.

The biopsychosocial model focuses on the biology or physiology of a client’s health; the psychology or thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influencing health; and the ways that society and culture influence health (Engel, 2012). The biomedical model is an approach that sees the client’s health as the primary factor. The biomedical model does not take into consideration possible social factors which makes the medical model very limiting. With the biomedical model, a person’s social, psychological, and behavioral aspects are not taken into consideration (Engel, 2012).

The person-in-environment perspective takes into consideration the different aspects of a person’s environment and cultural beliefs and the principles of the biopsychosocial model looks at the physiological aspects of there health which also is influenced by the client’s environment and beliefs. The two seen to overlap and work together.

The biopsychosocial model is to not only improve on the disease approach but also change the proper way to assess and treat health and illness held by the medical model (Engel, 2012). Medical social workers are in an ever-changing field and different theories and approaches are always being tried. The biopsychosocial model is a more thorough model, when assessing human health, that a social worker can have in their toolbox.

I feel that the person-in-environment perspective will rely more on the principles of the biopsychosocial model. For example, your client has a family history of addiction, this can make a person more likely to develop an addiction compared to people without a family history of addiction. It is possible that a person’s biological factors could play a role in the development of an addiction but as a social worker, you have to take into consideration the psychological factor as well as their social factor and their environment.
