LAB #1 Units and Measurement

The purpose of this lab is to introduce the student to fundamental issues of measurement, which is an extremely important topic in quantitative sciences such as physical geography. The four basic dimensions — length, time, mass, and temperature — will be described, along with the units used in measuring these dimensions. Several systems of measurement will be described, including the Système Internationale (SI or metric system), which is the preferred system in the physical sciences, as well as the English system, which is common in the U.S. Students will learn to convert between the different systems, as well as to measure and calculate the dimensions of physical objects in the lab. Be sure to bring a calculator to this lab.

Pre-lab reading topics: The Metric, English, Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin systems of measurement. The basic dimensions of the physical sciences.
