Trying to predict the future of policing is a complicated issue. In fact, it is almost like looking into a crystal ball (Crank, Kadleck, & Koski, 2010) and trying to predict the future. Policing changes constantly. We can see this before the events of 0/11. Once the attacks occurred, policing changed dramatically with the formation of Homeland Security and the implementation of the Patriot Act. These two things changed the way policing was done in the United States in major way. Policing has never been the same since the attacks on 9/11 and no one could have predicted it would change in such a major way as it did.

One of the things that state and local law enforcement will face in the next five years is adapting to cultural awareness (Mayer, 2011). This meaning that there are some law enforcement agencies at the state and local level that still use practices against minorities that are illegal. Training must be provided to make sure that these practices are abolished by all agencies at the state and local levels of policing. The state and local police must also be aware of the changing circumstances in their districts when it comes to recognizing signs of terrorism and domestic radicalization (Mayer, 2011) in their districts. The attention must not be focused just on the minority population but on everyone in the community that has a tendency towards terrorist acts.

The state and local policing must also stay current in the next five years to changing technology. Technology changes on a daily basis and without staying current to future trends, this could leave these state and local policing agencies without the tools they need to stay current in spotting terrorist activities and preventing attacks. More data bases like COMPSTAT should be considered with information to be quickly accessed by these policing agencies to help identify threats. While doing this they must also be very careful not to infringe on citizens civil liberties.

Looking to the next ten years again technology advancements will surely take precedence in state and local policing activities. Again, training must be done constantly to keep up with current and future trends. Another possibility could be the use of militarized policing (Crank, Kadleck, & Koski, 2010).This meaning that the state and local policing agencies will model themselves around the military. While this would be something that could become true in ten years or so we are getting a preview of it today in cities such as Portland Oregon. While we assume these are not local and state policing agencies conducting these activities there today, this could become a trend. This could become problematic because it could hurt the relationship between community members and policing agencies.

While these are just predictions some might happen, and some might not occur at all. It would be safe to say that state and local policing will change over the next fifteen years, just how it will change could be anyone’s guess. Community poling no matter what other changes occur should be at the forefront of any changes to promote unity between community members and policing agencies.
