The Pact
You will be reading the book “The Pact” by Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt (The Pact by Drs. Davis, Jenkins, & Hunt. Riverhead Books. (ISBN#9781573229890).
This is a low cost paperback book and writing a minimum 5 to 6 page report (page count excludes Reference Page) analyzing the Sociological topics represented and applying the three major Social Theories (theoretical perspectives) to actual events. This assignment is designed to incorporate the topics, terms, concepts and social theories presented throughout the semester.
Your paper will be built around the hierarchical learning structure of Bloom’s Taxonomy. This classifies ascending levels of thinking.
Knowledge is the foundation of learning and thinking, but it is not enough to just know the name of a term or theory, one must comprehend it. For example, knowing that Social Conflict theory is one of the three major social theories is incomplete without understanding that the conflict theorists are interested in issues of power, inequality, and conflict.
This paper is, therefore, designed for you to demonstrate your knowledge and comprehension of sociological terms, topics, concepts and theories.
The structure of your paper will be as follows (organize your paper in this order):
Introductory Paragraph(s)
Begin your paper by giving a brief summary of the book and why, overall, it is relevant to sociology.
Application
Explain how the three major social theories (sociological theoretical perspectives) relate to specific situations, interactions, and social structures presented in the book. You will apply all three of the major social theories in this section (use separate paragraphs for each theory).
• Structural Functionalism
• Social Conflict
• Symbolic Interactionism
Analysis
In analyzing the content of the book, you will discuss how the book relates to many of the topics presented in your textbook chapters and how they influenced the trajectory of the lives of those involved (use separate paragraphs for each topic).
Topics include:
• Culture
• Socialization
• Social Interaction
• Groups and Organizations
• Sex and Gender
• Deviance
• Social Stratification
• Race, Economics
• Family
• Religion
• Education
• Health and Medicine
• Urbanization
• Social Change
You will include at least 6 of these topics in your report.
Be sure to give specific examples from the book The Pact of the sociological theories and topics, with corresponding page numbers in parentheses. Bold all uses of sociological topics, theories, and terms in your report.
Synthesis/Evaluation
In this section, you will bring a select few of the pertinent topics together and explain how they relate to one another and to the characters in the book. Compare and contrast, demonstrate cause and effect, and show correlations in your synthesis. You will conclude your paper by evaluating the overall content of the book. You may also include in this section your personal assessment of what you read.
References Page
The last page (not included in the minimum 5 to 6 page count), MLA style, referencing the book “The Pact” and the textbook, and any additional resources if utilized.
You will be posting this assignment as a document file (such as Word) in the appropriate module. This is to be in essay form, so use paragraphs.
Report should be word-processed in Arial 12-point font, double-spaced, MLA style. See grading rubric on page 11 of this syllabus for additional information.
Important: Have someone proofread your paper for you before posting the final copy. This may help you find errors (grammatical, punctuation, etc.) that you may have overlooked. Common errors are: Skipping a line between paragraphs when indenting; the use of “could of” or “would of,” rather than “could have” or “would have;” misplaced commas; confusion between “there,” “they’re” and “their;” using contractions such as “can’t,” “won’t,” etc.
