Chapter 5 of Managing Business Ethics discusses differences in the ethical cultural of organizations. What will you do if you find yourself in an organization whose values don’t match with yours? What will you do if a coworker challenges your values? It would be nice to think you could just leave the organization and find another job, but sometimes that is not a realistic option. However, that does not mean you need to surrender your values. One strategy for sticking to your own values is to prepare a “why my values are important to me story” in advance.

Imagine the following scenario:

One day at work your co-worker asks you to do something you feel is unethical, and definitely against your values. You say, “I won’t do that, it is against my values.” Coworker replies, “So what, why are your values so important to you anyway?” What will you say to your coworker?

Write a “why my values are important to me story” you can use to respond to your coworker. Make your story unique to you by including PERSONAL EXAMPLES or EXPERIENCES.
