Note: The title of the podcast is NOT Marbury v. Madison
- Listen to the Marbury v. Madison podcast (Kittens Kick the Giggly Blue Robot All Summer) from minutes 1:40-36:00.
- Read the article on John Marshall from page 103 (the first page) through the middle of p. 108, just up to the two sentences that read “M v. M was not really a decision. It was a lecture on morals to Jefferson…” Be sure to include footnotes 7 on p. 105 and 16 on p. 106. (Don’t judge this article by its looks or date. It’s funny!)
- Go back to Colonial Williamsburg and read (or review) the five things about Thomas Jefferson.
- Finally, watch the short YouTube video on Thomas Jefferson and his slave concubine Sally Hemings.
Even taking brief notes, the above should take you well under 90 minutes.
Podcast notes: On the podcast, you don’t have to follow any of the commentators’ names. I’m fine with he/she/they in your essay. You’ll need to keep straight: Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Marshall, Jackson, Federalist Party, Republican Party. It’s OK if the details of the court case itself are a bit hazy. There is no need to explain the case to me in your essay.
You must discuss the full podcast. This mean you must discuss Jefferson, Marshall, and Marbury v. Madison of course. But don’t forget to also mention Jackson and civil rights which are part of the very last part of the podcast.
Disclaimer: The podcast has mild profanity: nothing you wouldn’t hear on regular cable. One commentator has Andrew Jackson saying “G—d.” If you would rather not listen to more profanity, do not listen to the music at the end of the episode. It repeatedly says “G—d” And obviously, since the podcast is from three years ago, Merrick Garland is no longer a nominee for the Supreme Court. Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh are the two newest justices, both appointed by Donald Trump. Please don’t state in your essay that there are eight justices. We have nine justices–A full Supreme Court.
NOTE: The Supreme Court is always capitalized!
Second note: There is a transcript with this podcast. However, your experience will be much more enjoyable if you listen to the podcast. I promise. A lot of time goes into the music and the editing of these pieces.
Reminders: You must show that you covered all of the required material. But I’m looking for a discussion/analysis, not a straight summary. I want to hear YOUR VOICE (in a grammatically correct way.) Let me repeat: do not give me a summary—but still prove you covered the material. Review the writing instructions on Blackboard if you have questions about this.
Essays with fewer than the minimum 750 words will receive a zero. Headings and titles do not count. Do not write more than 900 words. Make sure that you wait, receive, and save a copy of your digital receipt. If you have problems with submitting, email your essay by the deadline.
