To prepare for this assignment, first read Newsweek magazine’s primary source account of the zoot-suit riots in Los Angeles during World War II. Next read historian Edward J Escobar’s article on the underlying causes of the riots.
Imagine that you are a reporter for a rival magazine in 1943. Your assignment is to write a more accurate account of the riots and the conditions that produced them. Write a report of at least two pages (double-spaced) that considers the actions and motivations of the “zoot-suiters,” “slick chicks,” servicemen, cops, and government officials who clashed in this wartime outbreak of racial violence.
