Microsoft offers a plethora of technology that can be utilized for data protection aside from distributed file system (DFS). These technologies include file encryption, memory protection, and backups. File encryption or encryption file system (EFS) offers an extra layer of security for all files and directories. Whilst also providing cryptographic security of specific files on NTFS file system volumes utilizing a public-key system. Windows provides a memory protection process that is wholly protected by its private virtual address space. Also, Windows offers memory protection by utilizing the virtual memory hardware. Lastly backups, Backup and restore of encrypted files is enabled by the raw encryption API, which reads and writes encrypted files while keeping the data in an encrypted format.

Encryption file system is especially important in operating a business when discussing fault tolerance because it offers so many advantages. Some of the benefits includes safeguarding privacy, data integrity, offers security when/if working remotely, can increase consumer trust, and offers a competitive advantage. Although EFS software can be costly, ranging anywhere from $232 to $264 per user, per year. That is a small price to pay than an estimated $5,000 due to a data breach exposure. These numbers can and will vary dependent upon the size of the organization in question.

Microsoft offers many different products that protect your data. Azure is a cloud-based technology and protects your data anywhere. With Azure users can classify data to certain sensitivities. That sensitivity decides what classification the data goes into. One great feature of Azure is the data / information can be automatically, manually or recommended to classifications. With Azure being cloud technology you can track the shared data in real time and see the activities on the data, and even revoke access.

There is also Windows Information protection. Windows Information Protection was partly introduced to company data, emails, etc that was being transmitted on user owned devices. WIP (windows information protection) used to be known as enterprise data protection (EDP). Used to protect from accidental leaks of company information. System Administrators can assign access control systems in order to control who has access to what data. Most of the time being a need to know basis. This is called information rights management (IRM). IRM is embedded into the documents or data itself and this is how its controlled who has access to which products. Controlling the documents protects the data/information even if it is leaked on accident or even purposefully.
