What is the Maricopa County Victims’ Compensation Fund? Review the Victims’ Compensation Brochure and Application for Crime Victim Compensation on the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office website.

Review “Victims Comp Rules” posted in the FILES section of our classroom. Would Reyna (from case study #2) be eligible for benefits? Do you ethically/theoretically agree with your findings?

Reyna is a 28 yoa Mexican national living in the United States illegally. She speaks broken English and does not have education beyond the 6th grade. She has three children, two of whom were born in the United States. Reyna is currently living with the father of her two youngest children, an American born Latino who is bilingual. Reyna’s boyfriend uses and sells meth, and has convinced Reyna to make meth sales out of their apartment when customers stop by and he is out. Reyna is arrested after twice selling to an undercover detective and has pleaded guilty to a class 4 felony. Reyna receives probation and continues to live with her boyfriend.

Reyna recently was physically beaten and raped by her boyfriend’s brother. Her nose is broken and she has lost two teeth. She wants to report the felony crime to LE, but is fearful. Reyna’s boyfriend does not want Reyna to report the crime. What would you advise Reyna? How would you explain things to her? Make sure to review what a “UVISA” is and how it might apply to Reyna’s situation. Go to the Federal Government’s website to learn about a “UVISA”. How will Reyna’s prior felony conviction factor into her eligibility for a UVISA?
