The perfect nanny

There are some disturbing moments fairly early in the novel about the nanny’s interactions with the children; for example the game of hide and seek, the biting incident and the chicken carcass scene. Sometimes only the narrator and reader know about what happens, and other times the mother is told about it by either the daughter Mila or the nanny herself. How are readers meant to understand these incidents? Are they mainly to reveal things about the nanny, the parents, build suspense?

Pick one of these scenes or another that you found particularly concerning and discuss its significance.
