QUESTION

What is the nature of the simple question “Why”? Or “How”? Or “What”? Most would assume these are merely interrogative words used to gain an understanding of something. However, such words stand as underlying peculiarities of myself. Curiosity sits at the heart of my adventures, ideologies, purposes for life, and it’s my secret to happiness. I have a profound interest in the psychology of people, which guides my personality and ambition to serve humanity.

According to the Myers- Briggs Personality type indicator, I am a “campaigner”. The core personality traits I possess are: extraverted, intuitive, feeling, and prospecting. I like to embrace big ideas and my actions reflect my sense of optimism and goodwill to others. I have a vibrant energy that can lead to many routes.  My intuition drives my curiosity and energy to solve the complexes of life.

Unfortunately, due to certain obstacles, I did not obtain the grades I wanted throughout undergrad but this is not indicative of the person I am neither as a student nor as a whole. When pertaining to academics, I am usually a proactive student. I use my curiosity and knowledge for full apprehension; I immerse myself in the material to have a vivid understanding. Learning is my bridge to success. I’m always eager to discover new information, especially relating to my field of study. Hence, I believe my curiosity drives my passion to practice medicine. Overall, I have the hardworking and essential skills needed to acquire and accomplish anything.

Growing up in a large city exposed me to diversity, where I met many different people from various backgrounds and cultures. Increasing interactions with others intrigued me to learn more about the human mind. I self-studied the nature of human beings: I grew vast attention towards social interactions, basic principles of relationships, and the psychology of why people do the things they do. My ambition is to pursue a career in healthcare and pursuit of this, I volunteered and worked within the medical field throughout college and post-undergrad. Working in this arena, specifically, the hospital strengthened my desire to become a psychiatrist.

Examples before me, such as Dr. Frances Cress Welsing enhanced my motivation. In 1991, Dr. Welsing wrote “The Isis Papers: The Keys to the Colors”, which is a collection of essays that discussed the in-depth issues on disproportionately disadvantaged communities in the United States. Dr. Welsing was a psychiatrist known for her theories and dedication to creating equity in healthcare. What I admire most was her curiosity towards a solution. Dr. Welsing’s theoretical methods and empowerment have inspired me in the field of medicine.

Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) strives to maintain a system of discipline knowledge, professionalism, osteopathic philosophy and stands as a leader in medical education. Combining my inquisitive mind, with knowledge and my urge to motive and inspire my peers would make a great addition to LECOM’s Class of 2021 Master of Medical Science. I have the leadership skills, intellect, focus, optimistic mindset, vivacious personality, and dedication that will make a successful student in the program.
