Identify your organizations strengths (discover), describe what you would hope that they could achieve (dreams), discuss what you’d like to do to achieve those dreams (design), and how you will go about doing it (deliver). Describe how authentic leadership complements appreciative inquiry and the characteristics of authentic leadership. Include in your discussion your personal experience with authentic leadership, ethical considerations of leadership, what the literature indicates regarding leadership, and what you’ve learned through the process of this activity.
QUESTION
In this discussion, you will explore authentic leadership and appreciative inquiry by performing an authentic inquiry on your organization using the concepts of discover, dream, design, and delivery. You will also discuss your thoughts on a capstone project. There are two parts to this discussion, please complete both.
Part 1
- Identify your organizations strengths (discover), describe what you would hope that they could achieve (dreams), discuss what you’d like to do to achieve those dreams (design), and how you will go about doing it (deliver).
- Describe how authentic leadership complements appreciative inquiry and the characteristics of authentic leadership.
Include in your discussion your personal experience with authentic leadership, ethical considerations of leadership, what the literature indicates regarding leadership, and what you’ve learned through the process of this activity.
Part 2
In this program, you will complete a quality improvement (QI) project as a capstone experience. The learning activities in your Phase 2 Courses help prepare you for this. As you progress through this course, consider how you might build on the information for your capstone project.
In Part 2 of this discussion:
- Discuss the site you are considering (or have chosen) for your capstone. Do not identify the actual name of the site or specific location (for confidentiality reasons). Just the type of site it is. For example: a large, urban acute care hospital in the southwest US, or a small non- profit community health center in a rural setting.
- Identify if you have found a mentor, and if so, their role in the facility. Again, do not mention the actual name of the mentor, or provide identifying information. Do not mention names of any individuals in the facility.
- Discuss a tentative capstone topic.
***In the last module in this course, you will share the progress you have made in arranging your capstone experience, and any challenges you have encountered.
ANSWER
Part 1: Authentic Leadership and Appreciative Inquiry
Discover: The strengths of my organization lie in its diverse and talented workforce, strong organizational culture, and commitment to innovation. We have a team of highly skilled individuals who bring unique perspectives and expertise to the table. Our organizational culture fosters collaboration, creativity, and continuous learning. Additionally, we embrace technological advancements and strive to stay ahead of the curve in our industry.
Dream: I envision my organization achieving a higher level of excellence and becoming a leader in our field. I aspire to see us recognized for our innovative solutions, exceptional customer service, and positive impact on the community. I want our organization to be known as a place where individuals thrive, where their talents are recognized and nurtured, and where they can make a meaningful contribution.
Design: To achieve our dreams, we need to focus on several key areas. Firstly, we should invest in professional development programs that enhance the skills and capabilities of our workforce. This will ensure that our employees are equipped with the knowledge and expertise required to drive innovation and deliver exceptional results. Secondly, we should foster a culture of collaboration and empowerment, where employees are encouraged to share their ideas and take ownership of their work (Amabile, 2014). This will foster creativity and promote a sense of ownership and commitment among the team. Lastly, we should establish strategic partnerships and collaborations with other organizations in our industry to leverage collective knowledge and resources, and to expand our reach and impact.
Deliver: We will implement a series of initiatives to deliver on our dreams. These initiatives include creating a comprehensive professional development program, implementing a knowledge-sharing platform to facilitate collaboration and idea exchange, and actively seeking opportunities for strategic partnerships and collaborations. Additionally, we will regularly assess our progress and make necessary adjustments to ensure we stay on track towards achieving our goals.
Authentic leadership complements appreciative inquiry by emphasizing the importance of self-awareness, transparency, and ethical conduct. Authentic leaders are genuine in their interactions, and they inspire trust and loyalty among their followers. They encourage open communication and create an environment where individuals feel safe to express their ideas and concerns (Kleynhans et al., 2022). Authentic leaders also promote ethical behavior by serving as role models and making decisions based on values and integrity.
In my personal experience, I have had the opportunity to work with authentic leaders who have had a profound impact on my professional growth. These leaders were approachable, listened actively, and provided meaningful feedback. They created a sense of purpose and inspired me to go above and beyond in my work. Additionally, they were transparent and demonstrated high ethical standards, which contributed to a positive organizational culture.
Ethical considerations in leadership are crucial for building trust and maintaining the integrity of an organization. Leaders must make decisions that align with ethical principles, considering the well-being of stakeholders and the impact of their actions on society. The literature on leadership consistently emphasizes the importance of ethical leadership in fostering employee engagement, organizational commitment, and long-term success.
Through this activity, I have learned the significance of leveraging an appreciative inquiry approach to identify and build on organizational strengths. By focusing on strengths and positive aspects, organizations can create a more engaging and empowering work environment. Authentic leadership complements this approach by providing the foundation of trust, transparency, and ethical conduct necessary to drive positive change and achieve organizational dreams.
Part 2: Capstone Project Considerations
For my capstone project, I am considering a medium-sized community health center in an urban setting. This health center serves a diverse population, including individuals from low-income backgrounds and marginalized communities. The primary services provided by the health center include primary care, preventive care, and health education programs.
At this stage, I have not yet found a mentor for my capstone project. However, I am actively exploring potential mentors within the health center who can guide and support me throughout the project (Fernandez-Fernandez et al., 2022). A mentor’s role in the facility would typically involve providing expertise in the field of healthcare quality improvement, offering guidance on data collection and analysis, and assisting in the development and implementation of improvement strategies.
As for my tentative capstone topic, I am interested in exploring the effectiveness of patient education programs in improving health outcomes and promoting preventive care utilization. I would like to assess the existing patient education initiatives at the community health center, identify any gaps or areas for improvement, and propose strategies to enhance the impact of these programs. By focusing on patient education, I believe we can empower individuals to take an active role in managing their health and ultimately improve health outcomes within the community.
Throughout the course, I will continue to refine and develop my capstone topic based on further research and discussions with potential mentors. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to the quality improvement efforts of the community health center and make a positive impact on the lives of the individuals it serves.
