- Identify a video/DVD (from YouTube or elsewhere). Post the name and/or link in your discussion post.

- Discuss/Explain which paradigm is most represented in your video/DVD.
This video resource is Youtube. It is a Thai commercial describes someone who slammed the video’s protagonist with comments behind the screen. The landlord came to her market to collect rent. In the beginning, the boss was fierce and yelled at her tenants, forcing them to pay rent, and smashing one of the meat-selling tenants’ weighing machines. In addition, her two subordinates were carried away to consider the tenant. All this was recorded by a man with a mobile phone and edited and titled for posting online. Many people post their comments with malicious words. But these commenters commented wildly without knowing the whole story. It was not long before they commented that these things would be forgotten. But they do not know how much their comments have affected others.
I think this video uses a structuralist paradigm to tell people that people should think about how to respond after they know what happened. Because the consequences of your response are often beyond your control. The cyberviolence occurs because there is no person who supervises cybersecurity. In the information age, cybersecurity is a very important part of today’s society. All the causes of cyber violence are due to the incompleteness of the cyber supervision system and the laws and regulations on cyber violence.
II Overview
This project will involve comparing and contrasting Comte, Marx and Durkheim to a short (up to 30 minutes) video/DVD of your choice.
Directions
For this project, you must write a 2-3 page double-spaced analysis of a video. You need to:
- Identify a video/DVD (from YouTube or elsewhere,
- Provide a short summary of the video/DVD (What is the video about? Clarity is important!)
- Separately, explain how Comte, Marx and Durkheim would view – interpret your video/DVD. Thoroughly explain using sociological concepts/terms. (You may write as much as possible.)
- Which paradigm is most represented in your video/DVD? Explain.
- Please post your final document with all the above information included.
ANSWER
Analysis of a Thai Commercial: Sociological Perspectives and Paradigm Representation
Introduction
In this analysis, we will explore a Thai commercial video that delves into the consequences of online comments and cyberbullying. The video portrays the story of a landlord who confronts her tenants for unpaid rent, only to have the incident recorded by a bystander and posted online. We will examine the sociological viewpoints of Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, and Emile Durkheim to understand their interpretations of the video and discuss the paradigm that is most represented within it.
Video Summary
The video begins with the landlord angrily demanding rent payments from her tenants, displaying a confrontational and aggressive attitude. She proceeds to destroy a tenant’s weighing machine, while her subordinates physically apprehend and intimidate the tenant. A bystander records the incident on his mobile phone and shares it online, leading to a flood of comments from viewers who pass judgment without fully understanding the situation (– ENVIRONMENTAL TOBACCO SMOKE, n.d.). The video conveys the lasting impact of online comments on individuals and highlights the importance of responsible behavior in the digital realm.
Sociological Perspectives
Auguste Comte: Comte, known as the father of sociology, would likely analyze the video through the lens of positivism, emphasizing the need for scientific observation and objectivity. He would view the video as an illustration of social interactions and the effects of human behavior in a specific context (Little, 2014). Comte would emphasize the importance of understanding the underlying social structures and mechanisms that contribute to such incidents, rather than focusing solely on individual actions. He would emphasize the need for social order and the development of a harmonious society.
Karl Marx: Marx’s sociological perspective revolves around conflict theory and class struggle. When examining the video, Marx would focus on the power dynamics at play. He would observe the aggressive behavior of the landlord, representing the ruling class, and the oppressed tenants who are struggling to pay their rent. Marx would interpret the video as an example of the exploitative relationship between the bourgeoisie (landlord) and the proletariat (tenants). The video underscores the class-based inequalities and the potential for resistance and social change.
Emile Durkheim: Durkheim’s sociological approach emphasizes the importance of social integration, collective consciousness, and the effects of social facts on individuals. Analyzing the video, Durkheim would highlight the impact of online comments on individuals’ emotional well-being and sense of belonging. He would explore how the negative comments and cyberbullying affect the tenants and potentially lead to social isolation or even self-harm (Meilani et al., 2022). Durkheim would underscore the significance of social cohesion and the need for collective responsibility in preventing such harmful consequences.
Paradigm Representation
Among the sociological paradigms, the video most prominently represents the structuralist paradigm. The video urges viewers to consider their responses and actions after understanding the complete story. It reveals the far-reaching consequences of online comments and cyberbullying, emphasizing the need for responsible behavior in the digital sphere. The commercial highlights the lack of effective cybersecurity measures and regulations, which contribute to the prevalence of cyber violence. The structuralist paradigm examines the social structures and systems that shape individuals’ behavior and emphasizes the importance of addressing systemic issues to create a more just and equitable society.
Conclusion
Through the analysis of the chosen Thai commercial video, we have explored the interpretations of sociological perspectives offered by Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, and Emile Durkheim. We found that the video aligns most closely with the structuralist paradigm, emphasizing the need for comprehensive understanding, responsible behavior, and improved cybersecurity measures to mitigate the negative impact of cyber violence. By considering different sociological perspectives, we can gain a deeper understanding of the complexities within society and work towards creating a more inclusive and harmonious digital environment.
