Topic and Controlling Question
With a few exceptions (listed below), the topic of your research will be yours to choose. As such, it’s a decision you should make carefully with thought and deliberation.
My advice would be to select a topic that you personally want to know more about. Use this assignment as an opportunity to pursue a subject that awakens your curiosity.
Once you’ve selected a topic you will also develop a Controlling Question to guide your research. A controlling question is something that is intriguing about your topic, and something for which there is not a single, definitive answer to be found. Controlling Questions often invite a research to explore many answers, and then speculate as to which may be the strongest.

Do not rehash a topic that you’ve already covered in a high school research paper. While you may think that you’re saving yourself time on the research end, you won’t be able to reuse any of your previous writing on the topic. Additionally, it’s been my experience that most students who choose this route experience “burn-out” and have a great deal of difficulty completing the assignment.

If these are topics that genuinely interest you, you should be able to find a sub-topic or related issue to explore.

Annotated Bibliography
An annotated bibliography is a strategy for tracking and documenting your research. If done properly, it will serve as a powerful resource in organizing and composing an essay that requires multiple sources.
Your Annotated Bibliography should contain the following sections:
Introduction
Compose a paragraph that clarifies your topic, your controlling question, and your personal interest in the topic.
Body
The body will contain all of your sources and the annotations you create for them. For each source you include in your bibliography you will complete the following steps.
Step 1. Create a complete MLA Works Cited entry for the source
Step 2: Immediately following the entry, create your annotations by composing the following information in paragraph form using complete sentences.
Summarize the source. Articulate the main point, any significant sub-points, important claims or details.
Assess the source. Articulate the strengths and/or weaknesses of the source information (at least 2).
Evaluate the source. How useful will this source be for your essay? Provide a strategy for how you might use it – be as specific as possible.
